The Evolution of Partisan Conventions, 1880-1940

چکیده

This paper models partisanship and nonpartisanship as alternative norms or conventions of behavior. Evolutionary game theoretic techniques are used to analyze the selection of partisanship or nonpartisanship by a population interacting over time. Equilibrium selection in the model is driven by the varying observability of partisan behavior introduced by electoral institutions, coupled with the inverse relationship between the observability of partisan actions, and that of nonpartisan inactions. The model suggests that institutions which increase the observability of partisan actions also increase the likelihood that those actions will be taken. Conversely, institutions which decrease the observability of partisan actions thereby decrease the likelihood that such actions will be taken. We test the theoretical results from our model on aggregate levels of split ticket voting across states in the U.S. between 1880 and 1940. We find considerable support for the model in time series cross section (TSCS) estimates of the effects of electoral institutions on levels of partisanship across states, support which is undiminished after corrections for endogeneity and selection bias.

Electoral Institutions and the Evolution of Partisan Conventions, 1880-1940

This article examines variation in partisanship levels across the United States between 1880 and 1940 and suggests that the introduction of three electoral laws in this time period—party registration, primaries and secret ballots—can explain the geographic variation in partisanship levels across the United States during this era. Specifically, the article argues that the introduction of party r...

The Fluidity of Race: “Passing” in the United States, 1880-1940∗

This paper quantifies the extent to which individuals experience changes in reported racial identity in the historical U.S. context. Using the full population of historical Censuses for 1880-1940, we document that over 19% of black males “passed” for white at some point during their lifetime, around 10% of whom later “reverse-passed” to being black; passing was accompanied by geographic relocat...

Emptying the nest: older men in the United States, 1880-2000.

Between 1880 and 2000, the percentage of married men 60 and older living only with their wives in empty nest households rose from 19 percent to 78 percent. Data drawn from the US census show that more than half of this transformation occurred in the 30-year period from 1940 to 1970, bookended by moderate increases between 1880 and 1940 and very modest increases after 1970. Two literatures have ...

Jim Crow , Ethnic Economies , and Status Attainment : Occupational Mobility among U . S . Blacks , 1880 - 1940

Demographic and organizational theories yield mixed evidence as to whether ethnic economies are a benefit or hindrance to the status attainment of residents and entrepreneurs. In this paper, we provide one possible theoretical resolution by separating the positive effects that may emanate among co-ethnic neighbors from the negative effects that may result with the segregation of racial or ethni...

The Origins of African-american Family Structure*

I use a new data source, the Integrated Public Use Microdata Series, to trace race differences in family structure between 1880 and 1980. Analysis confirms recent findings that the high incidence among African-Americans of single parenthood and children residing without their parents is not a recent phenomenon. From 1880 through 1960, black children were two to three times more likely to reside...
